Disposable beverage cups have been around since 1908. In 1937 an innovation was introduced to add a disposable lid. This meant that the cup would have a rounded rim to receive a rounded lid skirt. The rounded rim fit is, to this day, the standard for securing a disposable lid to a disposable cup.

There have been different cup designs, of course. Large, medium and small sizes, even mega-large, 44oz. sizes, and double walled hot cups for consumer protection, etc. But the innovations are limited to just that: size and insulation and are devoid of esthetic design. The actual design flaw has never been addressed: How to keep the lid from inadvertantly coming off?

Lids, however, have gone through a multitude of redesigns. None of these designs have addressed the issue of the consumer's ability to safely walk, ride, move, etc., without the fear of spilling or spewing dangerously hot beverages all over themselves, or, worse yet, the fear of the lid simply coming off in one's hand. Disposable lids are still designed with a rounded rim skirt that fits the rounded rim cup.
